Chapter Twenty-One
Angeline
Jack Reese is kissing me. And my lips – traitors that they are – kiss him back for at least thirty seconds before I pull myself away. Not that I want to pull away because Jack’s lips on mine are electric. That’s almost as much of a shock as him kissing me here in the first place.
“What the –”
He yanks me to his chest, his hands firm on my back. His voice is low in my ear as he says, “There’s a guy over there who’s interested in applying for the “Blind Date Diaries”. He doesn’t know who you are and I’m guessing you want to keep it that way. I also highly doubt you want word to get out that you’re here with me.”
Maybe my head is still foggy from that kiss because I don’t understand. “Why?”
“Because as far as everyone else is concerned, you’re out with Lowell right now.”
Oh, right. My date with Lowell feels like it was a lifetime ago. “Okay. And as far as you’re concerned?”
“I don’t want Pink to fold any more than you do. Imagine my mother unemployed. She’d be all up in my business faster than you can say varnish and trust me when I say I just got her out of my business.” Jack chuckles as he rolls his eyes. His tone is playful.
Why my heart free falls is anyone’s guess. It settles somewhere around my stomach as I say, “Yep. You’re right. No one wants that.”
Jack glances over to where our gawker was supposedly standing and says, “I think we’re in the clear.”
He doesn’t let go of me and I make no move to put any space between us. Maybe that’s why my mouth goes dry when his eyes meet mine. I try to swallow and let my teeth scrape over my bottom lip. It’s pure nerves on my part, which ratchet up when Jack leans down and says, “Are you trying to drive me crazy, sweetheart?”
Judging by the obvious sign of his arousal pressing into my stomach, I don’t think he’s talking about me driving him crazy in my usual way. I widen my eyes and try – without much success – to keep my lips from tilting up. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Jack’s hands tighten on the small of my back, pulling me closer. “Don’t you?”
God, what am I doing? This is Jack Reese, for crying out loud. And unlike two weeks ago when we were on the verge of a hate fuck in his kitchen, this is pure attraction. Which I totally blame on hormones or pheromones or whatever kind of gnomes are responsible for this kind of thing. I lick my lips again. “Okay. Maybe a little.”
“Why?” All traces of joking have disappeared from Jack’s face, and I swear there’s more heat contained in that one word than I ever thought possible.
I know what he’s asking. Just like I know where an honest answer will lead us. I’m not sure I’m ready to be that honest, so I say, “I haven’t been in this situation in a long time.
